Image of the city in Belarusian folklore and Adam Mickiewicz’s early works

Abstract
The article presents the influence of Adam Mickiewicz’s works on the development of the romantic movement in Belarusian literature, representatives of which are Jan Barszczewski, Aleksander Rypiński, and Władysław Syrokomla. In the 19th century, Belarusians would live their lives in the country. The city was visited for the fairs, and the accompanying religious and secular festivals. Countryside inhabitants met with their friends and relatives in inns, drank, and told all kinds of stories, which later appeared on the pages of “high” literature. Mickiewicz’s works may serve as an example (”Pani Twardowska”, ”To lubię”, “Dziady”).
